Veins are the structures responsible for transporting blood throughout the body. Sometimes the weakening of its walls or the malfunction of the valves that drive its circulation causes concentrations of the fluid, this causes the vein to dilate and increase its size resulting in so-called varicose veins or varicose veins.
Its appearance is more frequent in the legs although they can also be noticed in the face and other places of the body. In some cases they protrude and acquire a bluish or violet color. These veins, also called spider veins, do not pose a serious health risk but do cause discomfort such as burning or itching.
There are several procedures to treat varicose veins, among which the use of natural remedies or drugs and in some cases performing surgery. Another treatment is called sclerotherapy considered by many specialists as the best option. This method is used in our My Cosmetic Surgery clinic with very good results; It consists of injecting a saline or chemical solution into varicose veins that causes them to harden and disappear.
Although this treatment will eliminate varicose veins permanently, with its use the factors that make them appear are not eradicated. Among them we can mention standing for very long periods of time, sedentary lifestyle, pregnancy or simply due to hereditary factors. Any person can suffer from varicose veins which can be treated by sclerotherapy, only in cases where the patient is or plans to become pregnant, suffer any skin condition in the area to be treated or is taking certain medications, the doctor will contraindicate the performance of Sclerotherapy.
The goal of sclerotherapy is to improve the appearance of unsightly veins. After each Sclerotherapy session, the veins will clear up. However, because some bruising usually occurs, the results may not be seen for two weeks. Sclerotherapy does not prevent new varicose veins from forming on the surface of the skin, therefore it should not be considered as a permanent solution to treat spider veins and varicose veins.
The treatment for varicose veins is an outpatient procedure and of simple application, so the consultation is a fairly simple process. The doctor will request that the patient undergo a series of medical examinations, analyze the case in a personalized manner and make recommendations related to the number of sessions required and the expectations related to the treatment.
Sclerotherapy consists of injecting a solution directly into the veins that want to be treated. With a micro needle, the saline solution is injected into the vein, which causes it to harden and fade over time. In a single procedure, numerous injections can be applied, according to the size of the area being treated. Because the pain is minimal, anesthesia is not needed. In general, the treatment time lasts between 30 minutes and one hour. To achieve optimal results, two or more Sclerotherapy treatments are generally required.
The Sclerotherapy procedure to remove varicose veins does not take extreme care but the patient must follow a series of recommendations, including the lack of excessive physical exercise during the first days. During the 2 weeks following the treatment the patient should avoid standing for a long time as well as lifting heavy objects. When sitting or lying down you should lift your legs and make movements that help circulation. The use of bandages or elastic stockings is mandatory during the time indicated by the doctor.

The lower limb veins do a very important job since they must support the entire weight of the blood column. In its natural state, its tonicity (which is what gives firmness to the venous wall) is enough to prevent them from stretching by that weight. But if for some reason they lose that essential tonicity and their tissues relax and stretch, it increases their capacity and, what is more serious, the valves that have veins inside to fragment the blood column in order to facilitate blood return , they cannot follow that stretch and they do not close the passage of blood as before. Then a certain amount of it refluxes down, and results in a damaging stagnation for the tissues. This gives rise to varicose veins.
If varicose veins are not treated, symptoms continue to progress and get worse. In some cases irreversible problems such as blood clots, chronic and uncontrollable swelling of the legs, thick skin, spots and ulcers may occur.
Varicose vein treatment is ambulatory and you can usually resume your daily activities after each session.
More than 50 percent of women develop varicose vein disease throughout their lives, although 40 or 45 percent of men also suffer from it. In the case of women, this condition is exacerbated by facing hormonal processes as strong as pregnancy and menopause and for this reason it is women who seek treatment the most.
The sooner you start coping with varicose veins the better the results. However, our specialists recommend that women wait until after they have children, as pregnancy aggravates this condition.
