Breast Reduction

What is breast reduction?

Breast Reduction or Reduction Mammoplasty is a surgical procedure to reduce breast size by removing excess fat, breast tissue, and skin, making them smaller, lighter, and firmer.

In the same procedure, a reduction in the size of the areola is usually done to give the breast a more youthful appearance.

Women with large breasts may have some problems due to this excess weight, such as back and neck pain or skin irritations under the breast fold, which is formed by the fall of the breast.

The purpose of the reduction mammoplasty is to solve these problems by obtaining smaller breasts and with a more proportional shape to the rest of your body.

Who can have a breast reduction?

Breast reduction is done to relieve a physical problem or for purely aesthetic reasons.

Many women who undergo this intervention are concerned about the excessive volume of their chest that interferes with many activities and causes physical discomfort.

In most cases, it is expected until the chest has fully developed, although it can be done before if the physical problems are very important.

This procedure is not recommended in women who intend to breastfeed after pregnancy because although it does not influence breastfeeding it can happen that with the hormonal changes that occur during and after pregnancy the effect achieved by surgery is affected.

The candidates must have a good general state of health and realistic expectations about the procedure.

If you feel that you are not satisfied with the size or shape of your bust, breast reduction surgery may be ideal for you.

What results can I expect from a breast reduction?

After a breast reduction surgery, you may feel better about your appearance and maybe more comfortable during various activities.

Also, pain or skin symptoms, such as stretch marks, may disappear.

Breast Reduction

You may need to wear a special support bra for a few months to feel comfortable and help the healing process.

The scars will be more visible during the first year, but then they will be less and less noticeable.

The surgeon will do his best to make the cuts so that the scars are hidden. The cuts are usually made in the lower part of the breast.

Most of the time, the scars are not noticeable, even in clothes with a deep neckline.

Breast Reduction / Consultation Process

During the first consultation, the plastic surgeon will evaluate the size and shape of the breasts, the firmness of the skin, and the general state of health of the patient.

A breast exam will also be performed and a mammographic study will be requested. The different surgical techniques will be explained, the size and shape of their breasts and the options or the combination of procedures that will be performed in order to obtain the desired results will be discussed.

You must state your expectations honestly and frankly, so that the surgeon will show you the alternatives available for your problem, with the risks and limitations of each of them.

You will also be explained what type of anesthesia will be used. The surgeon should ensure that the patient is familiar with the process and that he understands all recommendations prior to breast reduction surgery. Some of these recommendations are usually:

  • No smoking, at least one month before (and one month after surgery)
  • Do not take vitamin supplements or energy drinks.
  • Do not take anticoagulant medications.
  • Do not take birth control pills or injections.

In addition to these medical recommendations, there are other tips such as preparing the resting place beforehand, having the help of a family member, and a quiet place for the patient to rest properly.

For patients who live outside of Miami or who, for some reason, cannot go to the clinic to start the process and obtain the previous evaluation, it can be initiated through our Coordinators who will contact them by telephone to request photos that allow a more concrete evaluation of the procedure that the patient may need.

These photos are totally confidential and only used to allow our                 Coordinators to have an assessment regarding the type of procedure / estimated price / general guidelines.

Technique and protocol

The surgical technique in breast reduction has been perfected every time in order to achieve the best aesthetic results with the smallest, most hidden, and small scars.

There are three types of techniques to make the incisions in a breast reduction. These can be:

Periareolar   Only one incision is made around the areola. It is a Breast Reduction technique that is used for breasts in which the volume is not excessive, nor is it intended to correct breast fall.

● Vertical   A periareolar and a vertical incision is made from the areola to the submammary groove or crease that forms with the fall of the breast. It is a Breast Reduction technique indicated in breasts with moderate volume and degree of fall. With this technique, an adequate projection of the breast is achieved.

● “Inverted T” or “at anchor”   A periareolar incision is made, another vertical to the groove and another in the submammary groove, so that the scar is in the form of an “inverted T”.

This technique can be used in all kinds of reductions, from those that are made in breasts of excessive increase, as well as those where the increase is more moderate or slight.

Breast Reduction | Frequent questions

1. Can I have a breast reduction before I get pregnant?

This procedure is not recommended for women who want to get pregnant because after pregnancy the breasts undergo many changes and this could alter the results obtained with breast reduction. So it is best to do the surgery later, even if you do not intend to breastfeed.

2. Does breast reduction have any negative consequences for breastfeeding?

Breast Reduction does not bring negative effects to the period of breastfeeding, although what happens is that during pregnancy there are a series of changes in the woman’s body that could affect the results achieved with this surgery.

3. What medications can I not take before and after surgery?

Before and after surgery you should not take anticoagulant medications such as aspirin,  ibuprofen, anti-inflammatories, birth control pills, or injections.

In addition to these medications, there are other compounds that can cause the same effect as tea, some supplements associated with diets or vitamin supplements.

Ask your doctor about what you may or may not take before and after breast reduction surgery.

4. After surgery when can I return to work?

After surgery, patients can usually return to work a week as long as they do not perform work that requires physical effort. Rest will be an important element in recovery.
