Eyelid Surgery

What is eyelid surgery?

The eyes are one of the first parts of the face to show the signs of old age. This is due to a number of factors, including genetics, sun exposure, or the natural aging process.

As the years’ pass, we begin to notice changes in the look that contribute to giving an aspect of fatigue.

In the upper and lower eyelids the loose skin begins to be noticed, at the same time, the fat deposits begin to bulge forward.

Eyelid Surgery or Blepharoplasty comes to correct these signs by removing excess skin and fat that will make the eyes look more clear and youthful.

This can be done on the upper, lower eyelids, or both.

Who can have eyelid surgery?

Blepharoplasty is performed more frequently in people over 30 years of age although in some patients surgery is done before if the skin of the eyelids has aged rapidly or if they have inherited these characteristics from their parents.

Candidates are also those who have upper eyelids with oily pockets

What results can I expect from the procedure?

Patients are usually very satisfied with the results of eyelid surgery since this requires a minimum period of disability.

After the procedure, your eyes will appear more refreshed and less swollen.

With the removal of excess skin and fat, the fold of the upper eyelid will be more visible creating a more open and youthful look.

Eyelid plastic Surgery | Consultation process

The consultation is the right place for the patient and doctor to discuss the characteristics of the surgery. Each patient is different, so in My Cosmetic Surgery, we provide personalized attention.

The surgeon will need the patient’s medical history to verify his medical history before the operation and be ready to give him proper care. The patient should inform if they are allergic to any substance, if they are taking vitamins, medications (either prescribed or any other drug) also if they smoke.

They should discuss expectations regarding the results of the surgery, if it is necessary to treat all four eyelids or only the upper or lower eyelids and if it is appropriate to perform additional procedures.

The surgeon will explain to the patient the techniques and anesthesia that he will use and give specific instructions on how to prepare for surgery including rules for eating or drinking, the time in which he should stop smoking and certain vitamins or medications to take or avoid.

If the patient follows these instructions it will help his surgery to be performed more efficiently and without obstacles. When making preparations the patient should ensure that someone takes him home after surgery and to help him for a few days if necessary.

Technique and protocol

The surgeon will begin by carefully measuring the appropriate amount of skin to be removed, then inject a local anesthetic into the eyelid so that the patient does not feel any discomfort during the surgery. The incision will be made ensuring that the scar is hidden in the natural crease of the eyelid.

Then the surgeon separates the skin from the fatty tissue and muscle, removes excess fat, and cuts the skin and sagging muscles. The incision is closed with very fine sutures that will remain on the eyelids for a week.

If you have a fat bag below the lower eyelids but it is not necessary to remove the skin, your surgeon is likely to perform a transconjunctival blepharoplasty. In this procedure, the incision is made inside the lower eyelid without leaving any visible scar.

This is usually done in younger patients who have thicker and more elastic skin.   Sometimes when the flaccidity of the lower eyelid is significant, a Cantopexy is performed, which consists of tightening the eyelid, making it adopt a more youthful curvature, and raising the external angle of the eye that provides a torn shape.

Cantopexia is performed through the same incision of the upper Blepharoplasty.

Eyelid Plastic Surgery | Incision methods

In the case of upper blepharoplasty, the incision is hidden in the fold of the eyelid and is completely hidden. Blepharoplasty of the lower eyelid is addressed in two ways:

One is the external approach that is performed by an incision just 2mm below the eyelashes. The skin and muscle rise to reach fat bags.

The second approach is transconjunctival.

This approach involves an incision inside the eye to access the fat.

Then the fat is removed and if necessary, a minimum amount of skin is removed just below the eyelashes.

Recovery and postoperative care

As with any surgery performed at our My Cosmetic Surgery clinic, the patient will be monitored to check the results of the intervention and its evolution during the postoperative period.

It is important that the patient always follow the recommendations of our professionals.

Eyelid surgery can cause a slight inflammation in the area of the eyelids and some discomforts that will go away quickly.

It is not recommended to exercise for a month or expose the skin to the sun. It is also recommended that you keep your head upright.

The sutures will be removed two days or a week later, it is then that the inflammation or discoloration surrounding the eyes will decrease.

At 7 days the patient can return to their daily activities as long as they take into account the medical considerations provided.

You may need about two or three weeks to see the final results of the intervention.
