What is abdominoplasty or tummy tuck?
The tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is a complex surgical procedure for reconstructing the abdominal wall.
It includes the elimination of the excess of skin, the excess of fat and the tension of the abdominal wall muscles in order to shape the abdomen, the waist and the contour of the body.
Although most of the patients of the tummy tuck surgery are women, men also can have this abdomen reduction procedure done.
Though its efficiency on reshaping the body is noticeable, tummy tuck cannot be used for reducing weight as a substitute for diet and physical exercise. That is why this surgical intervention should only be performed on patients who have lost a significant amount of weight through an appropriate method and the body is stable. Likewise, in order to achieve a long lasting result, after having an abdominoplasty it is recommended that the patients keep a healthy diet and incorporate a physical exercise routine.
The tummy tuck surgical intervention can be performed as an independent procedure or it can be combined with other cosmetic procedures, such as the liposuction. The result is a flat and firm abdomen, with no excess of skin or fat.
Abdominoplasty is one of the five most popular aesthetic procedures in South Florida. This last years, the number of tummy tuck surgeries performed in the state has experienced a boom compared to other years.
Who can have the tummy tuck procedure done?
The abdominoplasty procedure is meant for people who have an excess of flaccid skin and fat concentrated on the abdomen. To be an ideal candidate, the patient should be physically and emotionally healthy, weight between 25 pounds more or less than his/her ideal weight, be a non smoker and have realistic expectations regarding the results of the tummy tuck.
The course of the years, the sudden or significant lost of weight or pregnancy are one of the reasons that often motivate our patients to have this procedure done.
Both men and women are eligible to have an abdominoplasty procedure done.
This surgery is not meant for losing weight, this means, it is not a method for treating obesity.
Which results can I expect after an abdomen reduction surgery?
The tummy tuck will give as a result a firmer and flatter abdominal contour, in proportion to the body weight and the physical type of the patient. The final results might not be visible at the beginning but after a week or two the patient will be proud and confident about his/her new body.
Consultation process before the abdominoplasty
Each patient is unique, therefore personalized attention is essential to us. The success of an abdominoplasty and the safety of the intervention strongly depend on the complete sincerity of the patient during the consult. Several questions regarding the patient’s health will be asked, as well as their wishes and lifestyle. Probably, the surgeon will do an evaluation on the patient’s general health condition, take pictures for the medical record, analyzed the patient’s options, recommend a treatment, comment on the possible results of the tummy tuck and the potential risks and complications.
Technique and protocol of the tummy tuck
During an abdominoplasty surgery, the level of correction needed will determine the length of the incision. Through this incision the weakened abdominal muscles are corrected and sutured and the excess of fat, tissue and skin is eliminated. An incision around the belly button might be necessary to remove the excess of skin on the upper area of the abdomen.
Whatever the variant, a tummy tuck surgery begins with an incision on the abdomen in order to access the abdominal muscles and the adipose tissue located on the belly area. After having the muscles tensed, the skin is settled on the desired position and the excess of skin is removed.
Tummy Tuck Variants
The tummy tuck procedure can be subdivided in two categories depending on the needs and characteristics of the patient:
Complete abdominoplasty: it is when the incision is made from side to side of the hips in order to eliminate the excess of skin and fat.
Belt tummy tuck or extended tummy tuck: it is a surgery that will include the entire abdomen and back, surrounding the body as a belt. Is is recommended for patients who have a bigger fat deposit and excess of skin or patients that have lost weight significantly.
Partial abdominoplasty, mini tummy tuck or mini lipectomy: it is a minor variant of this procedure for patients with a smaller fat deposit and accumulated skin. It is a smaller incision and the manipulation is on a smaller scale.
While a complete abdominoplasty lasts around 2 and half hours and 4 hours, a mini tummy tuck can be performed between 1 or 2 hours. It will depend on the patient morphology and the amount of accumulated fat, or if it also treats the area of the waist, among other factors.
Tummy tuck incision methods
The incision for a complete abdominoplasty is usually executed from hip to hip and it can take the form of a V or an U, so that the scar can be hidden when wearing a bikini. The surgeon will determine the shape and length of the incision according to the patient’s preferences and the amount of correction needed. The incision can also be made around the belly button.
With a mini tummy tuck, the surgeon can make the incision as low as possible, so that ost can be hidden on the pubis area. The skin of the abdomen that under the belly button is removed, therefore there there are no incisions around the belly button. The length of the mini tummy tuck incision will vary depending on the amount of skin the surgeon will wave to remove.
On a circumferential abdominoplasty or belt tummy tuck, the incision will be made around the entire body by following the line of the waist, as if it was a belt. This is a deep procedure because it eliminates the excess of skin from the sides of the abdomen, the back and at the same time, it lifts the buttocks and at some point thighs too.
Recovery and aftercare of an abdomen reduction surgery
Once the abdominoplasty procedure is done, the patient should follow doctor’s recommendations. Our professionals will guide the patient during the entire postoperative period. Generally, the most immediate recovery after a tummy tuck surgery takes from 7 to 10 days on which the patient should rest. After the first 24 hours the patient will have his/her first follow up appointment to check on how the surgery went. After 7 days, the patient will have another appointment where the medical staff will check on the drains and the patient’s general health condition. Normally, drains are removed on this appointment and it is very important not to remove them before the medical staff say so. Every 7 days the patient will have follow up appointments for a month. By that time, approximately, the patient should be discharged.
Tummy tuck patients are recommended to to take a break of at least 7 to 10 days before going back to their daily activities. After these days the patient will take over some of their usual activities as long as the activities do not require too much physical effort. It is not recommended to use anticoagulant medicaments as aspirin or ibuprofen during the postsurgical period.
